Regarding Rod Bechtel\u2019s comments (on page 5 of the April 2010 GMHGA newsletter) about Gen. Mac congratulating a guard at the Dai Ichi Building, I would relate this story:<\/p>\n

Dec 24, 1947 (Christmas Eve) I stood the post on the General\u2019s office door for the first time.\u00a0 The General arrived as usual about 5 PM and I came to Present Arms.\u00a0 As the General past he stopped and said, \u201cYou are new here aren\u2019t you, son?\u201d\u00a0 Surprised, I answered, \u201cYes Sir.\u201d\u00a0 He asked my name, where I was from and how long I\u2019d been in Japan.\u00a0 He then said, \u201cYou are a long way from home on Christmas Eve, aren\u2019t you.\u00a0 Carry on.\u201d and then he disappeared into his office.<\/p>\n

A couple of months later I\u2019d made Sergeant.\u00a0 When the General left the Dai Ichi, my post was in the lobby opposite the elevator.\u00a0 As soon as the General came out of the elevator and saw me saluting him, he came up to me and said, \u201cSedlacek, congratulations on making Sergeant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since I had not spoken with the General in the intervening two months I thought that was quite remarkable and speaks to the great memory he had.\u00a0 There may have been other members of the Guard who have a similar story to tell but the time frame fits with Rod\u2019s report.<\/p>\n
